A shopping centre in Liverpool city centre has been badly damaged after armed robbers smashed a car through it.

The pair backed a silver Vauxhall Zafira into Clayton Square Shopping Centre and demanded money from security guards delivering cash at an ATM.

Police said the robbers then stole a cash box and escaped in a black hatchback car at 0720 GMT.

A number of shops in the mall have been unable to open after the area was cordoned off for police to investigate.

Debris from shop fronts and glass from the entrance has covered the floor of the shopping centre.

Both men wore dark clothes and balaclavas during the raid.

Witnesses or anyone with information should contact police.
