Jordi Gómez has joined Sunderland from Wigan on a free transfer. The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder has agreed a three year deal at the Stadium of Light and will join the club on 1 July.

Gómez has recently won Wigan’s player of the season award and, having previously played for Barcelona, Espanyol and Swansea would appear well suited to the possession-based passing game Gus Poyet is attempting to instil at Sunderland.

Signed for Wigan by his mentor Roberto Martínez, Gómez excelled under his successor, Uwe Rösler, last season, scoring 11 goals from midfield as the 2013 FA Cup winners narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

He becomes Sunderland’s second recruit of the summer, the West Brom right back Billy Jones, another free agent, having signed for Poyet’s squad earlier in the week.
