Aggreko said Mr Cockburn did not apply for the role of chief executive on a permanent basis and has also decided to step down from the board after nearly 14 years.
Aggreko said Carole Cran, currently interim chief financial officer, will take over from Mr Cockburn permanently as finance chief immediately.
Ms Cran joined Aggreko in 2004 and has worked closely with Mr Cockburn, most recently as finance director.
