Virginia Wade was born in Bournemouth in 1945 and raised in South Africa where her father was archdeacon of Durban. A graduate of Sussex University, Wade became a professional tennis player in 1968 and was British No1 for over a decade. She won the US Open in 1968, the Australian Open in 1972 and Wimbledon in 1977. Since her retirement in 1986, she has become a television commentator. She lives in New York and London.
