He has already done for the street credibility of Mumford and Sons and the British trip-hop trio London Grammar. And when he said he liked The Smiths Johnny Marr pleaded with him to stop. “I forbid you to like it,” he wrote on Twitter.

Now the curse of Cameron is about to strike again after Downing Street revealed that the Prime Minister is now the proud owner of a pair of uber cool ‘Beats’.

The £199 headphones were the only ‘gift’ that Mr Cameron received in the last few months that he decided he would pay money to keep.

He turned down a “selection of Marks and Spencer items” generously donated by a member of the public, dates and wine from the President of Algeria and a hamper from the Sultan of Brunei. He didn’t even want a miniature model aircraft from Bombardier.

But – perhaps on the advice of his communication director Craig Oliver who is known to be an early adopter of the headphones - the Beats were a different matter.

The curse of Cameron could not come at a worse time for Beats. The fashionable headphone brand, founded in 2006 by the American rapper Dr. Dre, is currently negotiating a multi-billion sale to Apple.

The deal, however, is yet to be finalised and Apple are understood to be particularly keen on the ‘brand’ rather than the technology behind it. They may now want to reconsider – or at least get a price reduction.

However there was better news for Apple’s rival Sony in the Downing Street gift stakes. Mr Cameron turned down the offer of a Sony Tablet.
