Firefighters were seen pouring water on the building from a high ladder as flames blew windows out.
Art school chef Austin Yuill told BBC Scotland he had been evacuated from the art school's new Reid Building, which sits opposite the Charles Rennie MacKintosh building.
He said the whole north-facing side of the building was "pretty much alight", with smoke and flames billowing out all of the first-floor and top-floor windows.
"One whole window has completely cracked and fallen out the rest are beginning to crack as well," he added.
