The count is getting under way in the Borders to find a council replacement for former Hawick provost Zandra Elliot who died earlier this year. An independent candidate has won a by-election on Scottish Borders Council to replace former Hawick provost Zandra Elliot who died earlier this year.
Her death prompted a by-election for a seat on Scottish Borders Council in the Hawick and Denholm ward. Watson McAteer has been returned as a councillor for the Hawick and Denholm ward.

The votes are being counted electronically in the council chamber at Newtown St Boswells. The overall turnout was 39.25%. Returning officer Tracey Logan said the count had run "very smoothly".
