Version 0 of 1. A debate about policing took an unexpected turn when a former minister quoted a tweet calling Theresa May a “f***wit” live on television. Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs, was on the BBC's Daily Politics discussing the reaction to the Home Secretary’s call for reform in the Police Federation when he made the slip. He said: “I'm afraid there have been a minority who have been outspoken and they're very active on Twitter and so on. “Peter [Kirkham] himself just a day ago described the Home Secretary as a ‘f***wit’ in his own Twitter, erm, line.” Mr Kirkham, a former police officer sitting next to Mr Herbert in the debate, seemed relaxed about the expletive but the presenter quickly cut across, saying “we won’t have any more of that”. Mr Herbert, the former policing minister, went on to criticise an “infantile discussion” by police officers in response to criticism of the Police Federation. Speaking to the group’s annual conference on Wednesday, Ms May cut its public funding and warned the group the Government would “impose change” after scandals such as the Stephen Lawrence inquiry and alleged Hillsborough disaster cover-up. Her comments did not go down well with some police officers, including Mr Kirkham who criticised many of her points, dubbing her “the f***wit Home Sec”. Viewers could scarcely believe their ears and took to Twitter to confirm what they heard.
