Care homes compensation hearings

Twenty-one former residents of Nazareth House homes in Scotland are seeking criminal injuries compensation.

Hearings are being held by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel in Glasgow over the next three days.

The appeals panel can authorise payments if they decide someone was the victim of a crime.

Earlier this year, a group received cash awards for their experiences at former children's homes in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Kilmarnock.

Following hearings in July, BBC Scotland revealed awards of up to Â£7,500 were granted to 18 former Nazareth House residents.

They said they were abused, beaten or humiliated when they were children by some of the nuns who ran Nazareth House homes.

Similar claims are expected from the second group who are now in their 40s, 50s or 60s. Both groups are represented by Glasgow lawyer Cameron Fyfe.

He said about 100 other former Nazareth House residents will seek compensation at future hearings.
