A footballer has been suspended for 15 games and fined £500 for posting abusive or insulting tweets.

The FA investigated 27-year-old St Neots defender David Deeney over allegations the posts were discriminatory about a disabled person.

He also allegedly tweeted regarding sexual orientation and gender.

Deeney admitted the charges last month. The Cambridgeshire club said he had returned from an education course and was hopefully a "better person".

The FA has not revealed the content of the tweets, but said Deeney had admitted charges under rules which cover inappropriate comments made on social networking sites.

The association said the amateur footballer had the right to appeal against the suspension.

Deeney has yet to comment on the matter.

A St Neots Town spokesman said the tweets were "not acceptable", but the club had a "care of duty" to the player.

He added the suspension would be discussed with him once the Southern Premier Division side regroups for pre-season training in July.
