A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the body of Belfast-born Ciara Campbell, who was found stabbed at her home in Carlow Town.

The 22-year-old was found dead in her bathroom by emergency services after being called by a man from the house.

A 23-year-old man, found with injuries at the house, is expected to be questioned by gardai.

Ms Campbell's four-year-old son, who was in the house at the time, is now being cared for by relatives.

The young woman was originally from Belfast, but is understood to have lived much of her adult life in the Springfield area of the south-west Dublin suburb of Tallaght.

She moved to the County Kildare town of Athy four years ago.

Ms Campbell had been working in a shop and attending a course for single motherhood, while living in rented accommodation at Ardmore Gardens in the Brownshill area of Carlow Town.

Neighbours spoke of their deep shock and sadness at the loss of a friendly young woman often seen playing with her little boy outside their home.

The man found in the house is being treated in hospital for injuries, believed to be self-inflicted.
