Egypt: Ex-Muslim Brotherhood Leader Is Acquitted
Version 0 of 1. Mahdi Akef, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, was acquitted on Wednesday of insulting the judiciary in comments he made to the press. Mr. Akef, 85, was arrested as part of the government crackdown against the Islamist group after the military ouster of President Mohamed Morsi. Mr. Akef faces other trials on charges of inciting violence, and he will not be released after the acquittal. The case against Mr. Akef stems from an interview he gave to a Kuwaiti newspaper when Mr. Morsi was in office in which he called the judiciary “corrupt,” threatening to force hundreds of judges into retirement. |
