The escaped birds were quickly shepherded back into the truck. About 1,500 birds were killed and a number escaped, North West Motorway Police said.
A spokesman said the motorway is likely to remain closed "throughout the morning peak travel period". The Highways Agency said one lane is still closed around the accident site.
Michael Clarke, from the Highways Agency, said recovery of the lorry had proved "quite complicated". The majority of the chickens died from the impact of the crash due to the way the lorry landed but some did escape and were hit by cars, police added.
