Ansa news agency said the victim appeared to have been shot. The victim, a fan of Rome's Lazio, was apparently shot in a clash with supporters of Turin-based Juventus, Italy's Ansa news agency reported.
It added that he was a supporter of Rome-based Lazio and that the clashes were with rival fans of Juventus, a Turin team. Prime Minister Romano Prodi said the episode was "very worrying". In April his government introduced a law aimed at stamping out football hooliganism.
It was enacted after a policeman was killed in rioting at a match in Sicily in February.
Lazio and Juventus were not due to play against each other on Sunday.
Lazio was scheduled to face Inter Milan and Juventus was up against Parma.
