At least 15 people have been killed in a stampede at a football match in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, officials say. Fifteen people have been killed in a stampede at a football final in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, officials say.
Reports say the trouble began after police fired tear gas in the crowded stadium, causing panic. More than 20 people were injured. The trouble began towards the end of the game when the home team AS Vita was losing 0-1 to TP Mazembe.
Local fans were unhappy after the home team, ASV Club, were defeated 1-0 by Tout Puissant Mazembe from Lubumbashi. The home fans began throwing stones on to the pitch.
Stampedes are a frequent occurrence at mass events in the country. Police then fired teargas to try and stop them, but the tens of thousands of fans in the crowd panicked and began pushing towards one exit.
Another 10 people were injured as people were crushed in the pandemonium and an investigation has been ordered, DR Congo's government spokesman Lambert Mende told the BBC.
"Four policemen were harassed by supporters. When they fired tear gas, the stampede began, causing the deaths," the local minister for central Kinshasa, Emmanuel Akweti, told Reuters news agency."Four policemen were harassed by supporters. The stadium was reportedly run down and packed beyond its capacity.
Correspondents say the two clubs - the most successful in the country's recent history - are great rivals and there have been reports of trouble at their matches in the past.
The match was the final game of the domestic season.
The teams are in the same group in the African Champions League and are due to play each other later this month in Lubumbashi, home city to TP Mazembe.
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has condemned the violence and urged a thorough investigation to ensure that it does not happen again.
