A 1954 bus from a Nottinghamshire town helped mark 100 years of service for a local transport company.

What is thought to be the last surviving 1954 West Bridgford bus was the focus of the centenary celebrations in the town's shopping area on Central Avenue.

West Bridgford Urban District Transport began serving the community in 1914.

In 1968, Nottingham City Transport (NCT) took over operation of the firm's fleet of buses.

Anthony Carver-Smith from NCT, which organised the event, said he was "thrilled to see our bygone buses make a rare appearance".

He said he hoped the 1950s West Bridgford bus would "evoke nostalgic memories" of the era for the community.

"People feel a genuine warmth and fondness when they get to see our bygone buses," Mr Carver-Smith said.

To commemorate the milestone, NCT unveiled a "West Bridgford 100 branded bus", a modern bus made to look like the 1954 vehicle.

Mr Carver-Smith said: "Thanks to our new commemorative bus people also get to see just how much our vehicles have changed over the years."

As part of the celebrations, NCT has been urging former customers and employees who used to travel on or work on the buses over the 100 years to share their stories.

"Some of these stories may well become part of a special Centenary Exhibition we're creating later this year," Mr Carver-Smith said.
