Glass found in jars of Sainsbury's olives

Sainsbury's supermarket has recalled olives after glass was found in some jars.

The firm said a "small number of jars" were contaminated and the product recall was a precautionary measure.

The products affected are jars of 350g green pitted olives with a best-before date of 13 January, 2017.

It is understood no-one has been injured, and customers are asked to return the jars to stores for a full refund.

Sainsbury's said it was was alerted to the issue after receiving a small number of customer complaints.

A spokeswoman said the supermarket was working closely with the supplier, and an investigation was under way as to how the incident had happened.

She said: "Glass has been found in a small number of jars of by Sainsbury's 350g green pitted olives. We take food safety very seriously and have removed them from sale as a precautionary measure. We are asking customers to return jars with a best before date of 13/1/17 to a Sainsbury's store for a full refund."

The Press Association news agency reported that the number of jars in which glass was found was in single figures.
