Spanish police have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to conceal more than 100g of cocaine in a ham and melted cheese sandwich in Benidorm.

Spanish police posted a picture of the sandwich on their official Twitter page, where nine small pouches of cocaine can be seen sitting on top of melted cheese and ham.

The 29-year-old Colombian man was reportedly arrested at a bus stop at the popular tourist town, ITN has reported, suspected of drugs smuggling. Officers searching the man’s home also found more than a kilo of the drug there, as well as marijuana.

A second 20-year-old man, who is understood to have been a room-mate, was also arrested in connection with the incident.

The arrests come after Spanish border police discovered 2,500 kilos of cocaine stuffed in pineapples that had travelled from Costa Rica to the Algeciras port on Wednesday.

Border police located the suspicious container at the port but allowed traffickers to transport contents to Madrid while they tailed them.

Four people were arrested at the scene. The seized cocaine would have had a street value of €150 million, The Local  has reported.
