An off-duty police officer shot as he dropped his child off at school in Londonderry remains in a stable condition in hospital after surgery.

Police have revisited the scene at Bishop Street where the 43-year-old was injured on Thursday, receiving injuries to his face and arm.

Despite his injuries, the officer, a Catholic, was able to drive to a nearby police station.

Dissident republicans are thought to be behind the shooting.

A car believed to have been used in the attack was found burned-out in the Creggan area of the city.
