The blast was near a mosque in the town of Malegaon, Reuters news agency said. Police told the BBC there may have been more than one blast. Fifteen other people were injured in the explosion in the town of Malegaon, said state police chief PS Pasricha.
No further details of casualties or of what may have caused the blast were immediately available. Some police officials put the death toll higher. They said three blasts occurred soon after Friday prayers, reportedly attended by thousands.
