Scottish Liberal Democrats launching European election campaign Scottish Liberal Democrats launching European election campaign
(about 14 hours later)
The Scottish Liberal Democrats are launching their campaign for the European Parliament election. Scotland's place in the UK and Europe are things worth fighting for, the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has said.
The party wants to emphasise its belief that Scotland being in the United Kingdom and the European Union boosts jobs and growth. His comments came as the party launched its 2014 European election campaign.
Scottish leader Willie Rennie and Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael will be at the launch at a spirits manufacturing plant in Edinburgh. Mr Rennie said the poll on 22 May boiled down to the "one simple question. Are you in or are you out?"
The party currently has one MEP. The Scottish Lib Dems, who currently have one MEP, said being part of the UK and the European Union helped boost jobs and growth.
It will use its UK national manifesto for the election on 22 May with the election message: In Britain, In Europe, In Work. Mr Rennie, Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael and European Election candidate George Lyon met staff at a drinks manufacturing plant in Edinburgh, as they launched the party's campaign.
The Lib Dems believe Scotland should be in the United Kingdom and the UK should be in the EU. They believe that is the best way to increase jobs and growth. They said that cutting ties with the UK or walking away from the EU would mean "gambling with the economy and leaving behind the special membership terms Scotland shares as part of the UK".
The Scottish Liberal Democrat leader said: "Liberal Democrats want Scotland to stay in Britain and in Europe because that means keeping things like the UK pound and protecting the 330,000 Scottish jobs that the EU supports.
"These are big things that are really worth fighting for.
"Our message to the voters is clear. If you want to keep Scotland in Britain, in Europe and in work then you need to back George Lyon and the Liberal Democrats at these elections."
