Teen is charged over student rape Teenager in court on rape charge
(3 days later)
An 18-year-old man has been charged with the rape of an American student at the back of a pub in Londonderry. An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the rape of an American student in Londonderry.
He is due to appear before the city's magistrates court on Friday. A detective constable said he believed he could connect Sean Rua O'Hara to the incident last Saturday night.
More than 150 people attended a vigil for the student at Free Derry Corner on Wednesday to express their outrage at the incident. Mr O'Hara's solicitor said he had kissed the girl and consensual sex followed behind the Bogside Inn.
The victim, who has since returned to the US, had been socialising with friends prior to the attack. Police said she was severely traumatised. A prosecution solicitor said the accused punched the girl, pulled a knife to her throat, and then raped her.
Mr O'Hara was released on bail of £2,000. A curfew was imposed from 8pm until 7am and he has to report to a police station three times a week.
The court ruled his home address should not be revealed.
The accused, who was also told not to consume alcohol or to enter licensed premises, is to appear in court again on 6 December.
