But according to Google, it no longer has a mark at all. Basingstoke has been replaced with the words "Town Centre" on Google Maps. But according Google Maps it no longer had a mark at all, when it replaced Basingstoke with "Town Centre".
Chris Quintana, of Hampshire's Chamber of Commerce, branded the gaffe "ridiculous", describing Basingstoke as "an amazing place". A Google spokesman said: "Whoops. Sorry for the mix-up. An engineer is quite literally putting Basingstoke on the map."
Google said it was looking into how the name change happened. The town name has now been reinstated on Google Maps on certain browsers, but on others the area is now left blank.
Mr Quintana said: "That is absolutely dreadful. Basingstoke is an amazing place. 'An amazing place'
