Youth held after care home deaths Police name nursing home victims
(1 day later)
A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths of two residents at a nursing home in Leicester. Two women found dead in a nursing home in Leicester have been named by police.
The youth was detained just before 2030 GMT following the discovery of the women's bodies at the city's Hayes Park Nursing Home. Rashni Badiani, 56, and Radhaben Chauhan, 72, were found in a room they shared at the Hayes Park Nursing Home in Rowlatts Hill.
A member of staff rang 999 after the bodies were found in a room at the home in Rowlatts Hill early on Wednesday. Police believe someone gained entry to their bedroom from the outside via a ground floor window.
Leicestershire Police said the suspect is local to the area. Detectives have been questioning a 19-year-old local man on suspicion of murder and are awaiting the results of further post-mortem tests.
An area around the home remains cordoned off and part of the building is also sealed as officers continue their investigation. Officers said it was clear Mrs Badiani had suffered serious head injuries.
'Detailed examination' Family mourn
Det Supt Chris Thomas, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a serious incident. There is a large cordon and we are carrying out a detailed examination at the home. Mrs Badiani had been a resident at the home since December 2004, and Mrs Chauhan had been a resident since August 2007, police said.
"Officers have [spoken] with members of staff and other residents at the home and we are piecing together the information we are being given to establish the last known movements of the victims." In a statement, the family of Mrs Chauhan said: "Our mother was a beautiful, bright, warm person, whose smile could brighten up a room.
Results of post-mortem examinations of the women's bodies have not been released. "We cannot believe what has happened. We are still trying to come to terms with the fact that we will never get to see that beloved smile again."
A spokesman for the nursing home said staff and directors were co-operating fully with the investigation. Both women's bodies were discovered by a member of staff who dialled 999 early on Wednesday morning.
"The staff at the home have contacted relatives of residents to reassure them about the situation and to advise them that the home is operating as usual," he said. Community 'stunned'
"The safety of our residents is our top priority and we will continue to fully co-operate with the police investigation." Det Supt Chris Thomas said he hoped the results of the post-mortem tests would give them "a clearer picture of the circumstances which led to the deaths".
Neither of the victims have yet been formally named. He added that a specially trained family liaison officer was supporting the families of both women.
A spokesman on behalf of the directors of Hayes Park nursing home said: "We have all been stunned with the events that have occurred since the early hours of Wednesday morning.
"A death is always difficult to come to terms with and even more so in these terrible circumstances."
Hayes Park is a purpose-built home providing care facilities for 49 residents in 39 single and double rooms.
