A man in his 20s is in a stable condition in hospital after being struck by a train in County Down.

He sustained chest and head injuries after the incident on the Belfast to Bangor railway line, near Cultra Station, at about 1820 GMT on Tuesday.

No-one on the train was injured, but the driver was said to be badly shaken.

Police and Translink officials have begun an investigation to establish what happened. Detectives have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

Train services on the line were suspended for a time but later resumed.
