The police helicopter and divers went to the scene and the the Lagan Weir was closed overnight. A police spokesman said the man was believed to be carrying a backpack and was wearing dark-coloured clothes.
It is understood the river bed and the area has been dragged by Belfast Harbour Commission. He said anyone who saw someone matching that description or who is missing a loved one should contact police.
