Murder inquiry after man stabbed Manhunt for murder suspect
(30 minutes later)
A man has died in hospital from stab wounds after an attack in a Hampshire flat in the early hours of the morning. A search for a suspect in a murder inquiry has been launched after a fatal stabbing in a block of flats.
The victim, who was in his 30s but has not been named, was stabbed in Havre Towers in Weston, Southampton. He later died at Southampton General Hospital. Tony Wilkinson, 27, from Bournemouth, Dorset, fled the scene in a stolen car after Neil Hampson, 32, of Southampton, was attacked in the early hours.
A 25-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police have cordoned off the area. A police spokesman said a fight broke out on the landing outside a 12th floor flat at Havre Tower in the Weston area of Southampton, Hampshire.
Hampshire Constabulary described the attack as a "self-contained incident" which happened inside the flat. A 25-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Det Insp Darren O'Callaghen, from the major crime unit, said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw someone leaving the flats in the early hours of the morning to contact police." Mr Hampson, a single man from the Merryoak area, died at Southampton General Hospital and a murder investigation, codenamed Operation Wycliffe, was launched.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out later. Mr Wilkinson suffered a serious facial wound and would have been bleeding profusely, police said.
He is believed to be in Bournemouth or Poole in Dorset and may be armed, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said.
She added: "The public are warned if they see him not to approach him but to call the police immediately by dialling 999.
"No weapon has yet been recovered."
The Dorset Police helicopter, dog and firearms officers have been drafted in to help their Hampshire colleagues with the search.
The stolen car was found shortly before 0800 GMT in Bournemouth.
Wilkinson is described as 6ft tall with short, straight, brown hair and of stocky build.
He has a scar to his right brow, a pierced left ear, a tattoo on his right wrist and "Tony" written on his knuckles. Mr Hampson's next-of-kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out later.
The area outside the flats has been cordoned off while crime scene officers investigate.
Detective Inspector Darren O'Callaghan, from the major crime team, reassured residents it was "an isolated incident".
