Version 0 of 1.

According to the Times, Sir Ian Blair will have to endure another 12 days of pressure, which could seal his fate.

The Daily Mail and the Guardian say the Met Police chief will be the subject of scathing criticism from the Independent Police Complaints Commission next week.

It centres over his attempts to block its investigation into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.

The Mail reports that two chief constables have been sounded out about replacing Sir Ian.

DNA results

The Sun and the Daily Mirror print a previously unseen photo of Madeleine McCann playing in a park.

The image marks the six-month anniversary of her disappearance on holiday in the Portuguese Algarve.

The papers note that a report of new DNA test results has thrown suspicion onto the McCanns again.

The Sun says the couple have endured "six months of anguish and baseless slurs", and the Portuguese police "should either put up or shut up".

'National hysteria'

The Independent reports on Romanian immigrants who are bearing the brunt of public outrage in Italy.

The Italian government has sped through a law for deporting anyone deemed to be a threat to "public security".

The paper says increasingly racist media coverage of violent crimes blamed on immigrants has built up a "mood of national hysteria".

The Daily Express asks if Italy can place public protection outside EU regulations, why cannot the UK?

Army expenses

The Guardian reveals that the Ministry of Defence is Whitehall's biggest spender on wining and dining.

The department has run up a £10m bill in two years, with more than £20,000 claimed in expenses by the head of the Army, Gen Sir Richard Dannatt.

In the French military, the famous Foreign Legion just cannot get the staff these days.

The Times reports that the force has been hit by soldiers deserting in order to look after their young families.
