Noel reaches hurricane strength Noel reaches hurricane strength
(about 12 hours later)
A tropical storm which has been battering parts of the Caribbean and Cuba has been upgraded in strength to a category one hurricane. A deadly Atlantic storm that has killed at least 108 people has moved past the Bahamas and is heading north-east on a long swing towards Canada.
The death toll from Noel has risen to at least 108, making it the deadliest storm of the Atlantic region this year. Noel was upgraded to a Category One hurricane late on Thursday before it passed through the Bahamas.
It is now heading north-east with maximum sustained winds of 120km/h (75mph), US meteorologists say. By 0300 GMT on Friday the hurricane was some 760 miles (1,225km) south-west of Bermuda, where a gale warning was in place, US hurricane officials said.
Noel earlier drenched the Bahamas where cruise ships have been delaying their arrival until the weekend. The slow-moving storm had already hit Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
Bermuda, a British territory on the mid-Atlantic, posted a gale warning in case Noel veers more to the east than forecast.
The storm is expected to weaken as it travels north-east over the cooler waters of the Atlantic, but is still forecast to bring storms and heavy rains to Nova Scotia, Canada, in coming days.
