TV awards ceremony gets under way Ant and Dec win three TV Awards

A host of stars from the small screen are attending ITV's 13th National TV Awards show at London's Royal Albert Hall, which has got under way. Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly have collected three prizes at the National Television Awards, which were held at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Veteran newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald is hosting the awards - the public vote on the winners. Their ITV1 series I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! took best reality show and the duo won best presenter.
So far I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here has won the best reality TV show, and EastEnders star Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey, won best actress. And their Saturday Night Takeaway show, one of several ITV1 hits to be caught up in a recent phone-in scandal, was named best entertainment programme.
For the second year running the BBC Two show Top Gear won best factual show. Doctor Who won two awards and took best drama for the third year running.

Ant and Dec, who are currently in LA on the way to Australia to film I'm A Celebrity, scooped the award for best entertainment presenter. McPartlin and Donnelly were unable to attend the ceremony as they were in Los Angeles, on the way to Australia to film the next series of I'm a Celebrity...
Doctor Who's David Tennant won best actor, the same gong he scooped last year. Instead, they spoke via a live satellite link-up to the audience on accepting their awards.
Last year's winners David Walliams and Matt Lucas made a stage appearance as comical characters Lou and Andy to present the best comedy award. McPartlin sent out a "massive heartfelt thank you to everybody who voted for us. We are over the moon".

The ceremony is being screened live on ITV1, with behind the scenes footage later on ITV2. Donnelly, referring to the phone-in competition, added: "It's been quite a couple of weeks.
ITV has confirmed Sir Trevor will resume his news reading role when News at Ten returns in 2008. "Thank you to everybody that has taken the time to vote for us. We are very grateful."
BBC One's EastEnders won two awards - best soap and best actress, which went to Lacey Turner, seen in the show as Stacey.
Former Hear'Say singer Kym Ryder was named most popular newcomer for her role as barmaid Michelle Connor in Coronation Street.
For the second year running the BBC Two motoring series Top Gear won best factual show.
Special recognition
This time presenter Richard Hammond was able to collect the award in person. Last year he was unable to attend as he was recovering from a car crash that occurred during filming.
Racing driver Lewis Hamilton presented another Top Gear host, Jeremy Clarkson, with the special recognition award.
On accepting the award he joked: "I was a bit miffed that Al Gore won the peace certificate [Nobel Prize]. This more than makes up for it."

He then insisted he had had "no idea" that he was to collect the award, before congratulating Hamilton on a "phenomenal year".

The X Factor picked up the gong for best talent show, which viewers were invited to vote for while the ceremony was broadcast.
