Outside the court, Mr Johnson's father John, 56, said: "We have got our justice today. He was a devoted father and a good Sunderland fan.
"It is still too raw for us and we will never get over this."
Det Insp Roger Ford, who led the murder inquiry for Northumbria Police, said local residents had helped bring the youths to justice.
He said: "The response from the community shows how outraged they were at the events of that night."
