Pc Peter Winterflood, of Northants Police, said: "Our control room got in touch with Network Rail to stop the power because of the impending danger.
"The vehicle stopped within 3-4ft of the actual track.
"If the train had come along it would have hit it and there would have been a serious accident."
A police investigation into the crash is underway.
