Part of the road has been closed at junction 11 on the southbound carriageway and diversions are due to remain in place until lunchtime. The road was not fully re-opened until 12 hours after the collision. At one point tailbacks were reported to have been more than 11 miles long.
The northbound section of the road has been reopened, but police are warning motorists to avoid the area. The man who died was thought to be in his 20s and from Eastleigh. A second person was taken to hospital.
'Serious disruption' The motorway was closed in both directions at 0130 BST shortly after the collision.

Police say the southbound carriageway is likely to be shut throughout the morning while officers investigate and clear the scene.
Insp Roger Price, of Hampshire police, said: "Due to the number of vehicles and drivers involved it is a complicated investigation.
"There is no doubt that this will cause serious traffic disruption this morning and I would urge drivers where possible to take alternative routes."
