The road was closed following the accident, with traffic being diverted at Tobermore Road in Maghera. North Antrim SDLP assembly member Declan O'Loan said the death was a tragedy.
"This is a terrible tragedy - Rory was only 18," he said.
"The family are clearly heartbroken. I know the family and I can only assure them of the support of the whole community at this most difficult time."
