Police investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man attacked in Cardiff city centre have released a 23-year-old local man on bail.

Officers had arrested him on Friday following the death of Christopher Jones, of Marshfield, Cardiff.

He was injured early on Sunday, 14 October in St Mary Street and died a week later.

Police want to trace a taxi driver who picked up a man who had an argument with Mr Jones on the night in question.

The man was driving an official Cardiff black and white saloon cab and police believe he is Asian with a full beard.

"He bears a resemblance to the England cricketer Monty Panesar," said Det Insp Richie Jones.

Police believe that Mr Jones and his two male friends had an argument with another man sometime between 0400 - 0530 BST at the bottom of St Mary Street in the area between McDonald's and Flares.

We are still appealing for the taxi driver - as well as any other witnesses - to come forward and tell us what they saw, no matter how insignificant it may seem Det Insp Richie Jones

The name Rooney was chanted - a reference to the footballer Wayne Rooney.

Police said the black and white cab picked up a man in St Mary Street. The man travelled a short distance before getting out of the taxi and making his way back to the area.

Detectives also want to speak to anyone who witnessed the row in St Mary Street.

Anyone who saw Mr Jones being assaulted and collapse is also asked to call police.

Mr Jones died of a head injury in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, a week after the incident.

Det Insp Jones said: "Christopher's death is a tragedy for all those who knew him.

"He was a young man who had his life ahead of him and we are still appealing for the taxi driver - as well as any other witnesses - to come forward and tell us what they saw, no matter how insignificant it may seem."

Anyone with information is asked to contact 029 2057 1530 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
