Shock at child's driveway death Shock at child's driveway death
(about 4 hours later)
A one-year-old boy has died after an accident at a house in the Highlands. The parents of a one-year-old boy crushed under the wheels of his family's car have paid tribute to their son.
Police named the youngster as Iain Goodwill at a media conference held at Northern Constabulary's headquarters in Inverness. Police confirmed that Iain Goodwill died outside his home near Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire, in an accident involving a vehicle.
It is understood that the child was crushed by a car as it rolled backwards down the drive with the baby's three-year-old brother inside. His parents described him as a "happy little boy well loved by everyone".
The emergency services were called to a property in the Kiltarlity area in the hills above Loch Ness on Wednesday. Community council chairman Hamish Maclennan said the small community had been shocked by the death.
Northern Constabulary said the boy was taken to Raigmore hospital in Inverness where he later died. Northern Constabulary refused to elaborate on reports that the child's three-year-old brother was in the car at the time.
The accident happened in the community of Foxhole, which is between Kiltarlity and Drumnadrochit at about 1645 BST. In a statement from the family, which was read at a media conference in Inverness, Iain's parents said they were going through a difficult period and needed time to grieve.
Police, Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to the house. Iain was taken to hospital after the accident
Hamish Maclennan, of Kiltarlity Community Council, said the accident came as a great shock to local people whose hearts went out to the family involved. A police officer, reading from the statement, said: "Words cannot describe the grief and pain we are all feeling.
"Iain was such a happy little boy well loved by everyone.
"Iain loved playing in the sand and with his brothers. He was absolutely delightful."
Mr Maclennan said it was hard to find words to describe the local community's reaction.
He said: "The whole community is just gutted over it.
"Our thoughts are with the family at this time. It is so hard to understand these things."
