'Sick Britain' dominates papers
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/7057590.stm Version 0 of 1. The state of the nation's health makes the front pages as a government report names Britain "the sick man of Europe". The Independent reports British people drink more alcohol, eat less fruit and vegetables and are more likely to die from smoking than the average European. The Daily Telegraph says there is "a stark north-south divide" with boys born in Manchester likely to die 10 years before those from some parts of London. The headline in the Daily Express is England - the land of fatties and drunks. Carbon emissions The Guardian claims it has been shown leaked documents suggesting the government has a plan to abandon renewable energy targets. It says business secretary John Hutton will tell the prime minister to "help persuade" German Chancellor Angela Merkel to set lower renewable targets. The paper says it comes as scientists claim carbon emissions are accumulating more quickly than predicted. The Times also runs the story and says the findings have serious implications. Juvenile juries The Daily Mail turns its attention to a new approach to meting out justice. There is outrage over a scheme in which children as young as 10 deal with vandals, anti-social behaviour and under-age drinking, the paper claims. It asks if any minister in his wildest dreams believes a single thug would be deterred by a jury of schoolchildren. The Mail and the Daily Telegraph carry a study accusing stores of failing to cut waste despite pledges. The Mail says Marks & Spencer is among the worst. Wildfires The Sun shows a series of pictures of fires in California under the headline Malibu melts. Stars including film director James Cameron and singer Olivia Newton John joined the rush to flee the fires which have engulfed 40,000 acres, it says. The Mirror devotes three pages to the return of ITV's News at Ten. Sir Trevor McDonald will host the bulletin with Sky News presenter Julie Etchingham, it says. The 10pm slot was moved to 10.30pm eight years ago. |
