China workshop blaze 'kills 34'

A fire at an illegal shoe factory in eastern China has left 34 people dead, according to state media.

A further 21 people needed hospital treatment after being hurt in the blaze in the city of Putian, Fujian province, on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The fire broke out at 2150 local time (1350 GMT) at a workshop making shoe parts. Firefighters managed to get the flames under control within an hour.

Local officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

Sources from Xiuyu district government told Xinhua that the factory was operating without a licence.
