Greater Manchester Police have stepped up patrols in the area to help with the investigation and to provide reassurance to the community.
The youngster, from Longsight, had been at a party in Moss Side prior to the attack.
A resident living close to the scene, who did not want to be named, said: "We held a party here last night, and he was at the party.
"I gave him some food and then I don't know what happened. None of us know what happened because we were all inside."
Witness appeal
Since June 2006 a total of three teenagers have been shot dead in Greater Manchester.
Fifteen-year-old Kally Gilligan was shot by her ex-boyfriend Josh Thompson, 18, in Salford in June 2006.
Three months later Jessie James was fatally shot and in April this year, Kasha Peniston, then 16, shot his sister Kamilah, 12, in the head with a handgun his mother kept in their home in Gorton.
On 25 September, two youngsters, aged 12 and 15, were shot in Fallowfield and on October 8, two gangs of youths fought a gun battle in Moss Side.
Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the latest shooting to contact them.
