Police investigating the murder of a South Yorkshire teenager say they have some strong new leads after receiving information from the public.

Jonathan Matondo, 16, was shot dead in a playground on Nottingham Cliff in the Burngreave area of Sheffield on Wednesday night.

Police said they were "actively pursuing some strong lines of inquiry".

They said the public response had been "good" but appealed for anyone else with information to come forward.

On Thursday the teenager's uncle called for people to help catch his nephew's killers to get them off the streets.

Armand Vibila said: "He was only 16 - much too young to die - and much loved by his friends, family and the community."

South Yorkshire Police said any witnesses who came forward could be given protection.

'Great person'

The force said house to house inquiries would continue in the Burngreave area on Friday.

Speaking alongside Mr Vibila at a news conference, the Reverend Jack Kinsiona said the murdered teenager had expressed ambitions to become a preacher.

Mr Kinsiona, from the Light of Christ Church in Burngreave, cried as he spoke about the youngster.

He said: "Jonathan was a great person, he had been to our church. . . I am crying now . . . I want to ask the government to find who killed Jonathan, because Jonathan was very popular in the church."

A post-mortem examination has revealed Jonathan died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
