Paramedics said if it had happened half an hour later the owner would have been out and the baby left in the cold. Paramedics said if it had happened later the owner would have been out and the baby exposed to the cold for hours.
The child was wearing an all-in-one baby grow. He was taken inside the house and warmed by the fire before ambulance staff took him away. The child was found lying on a concrete step and was cold but otherwise healthy. The baby has been taken to Heartlands Hospital in east Birmingham.
'Wrapped in blankets'
West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the house, in Rycroft Grove, shortly before 1100 BST on Monday.
Emergency medical technician Steve Howard said he asked the house-owner to put the fire on and wrapped the baby in blankets to get him warm.
"The baby boy was very cold having been lying on a concrete step, but he was very alert.
"The house-owner said if it had been half an hour later he would have been out and the baby could have been there for hours in the cold.
"It could have been a much worse picture if no-one had been at home," he said.
The baby boy, thought to be hours old, had been left wearing an all-in-one baby-grow.
