Version 0 of 1.

A firefighter's face was struck by a rock thrown through the window of the engine he was driving on Friday night.

He was hit in the jaw as the crew were returning from a fire in the Bawnmore area of north Belfast. The officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Group Commander John Langtry says the incident "could have been much worse".

"At the time, the appliance was moving at about five to ten MPH, but if it had even been doing 20 or 30, the results could have been catastrophic," he said.

"It just doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened... had he lost control, had he mounted the pavement or had there been members of the public walking along the pavement.

"Or even if the appliance had crashed into a building, it just doesn't bear thinking about."
