Protest teacher killed in Oaxaca

A teacher has been killed in a drive-by shooting in the southern Mexican city of Oaxaca.

Fernando Hernandez is the latest victim in an ongoing conflict between striking teachers and Governor Ulises Ruiz.

At least five people have died since protesters, who are demanding Mr Ruiz's resignation, began barricading streets and occupying buildings in May.

On Wednesday, the protesters were dealt a blow when federal lawmakers passed a resolution against Mr Ruiz's dismissal.

The resolution, which is expected to be discussed by the Senate on Thursday, says there is no power vacuum in Oaxaca, as alleged by the protesters.

Striking teachers and left-wing groups accuse the governor of rigging the 2004 election and of using excessive force against dissenters.

A spokesman for Mexico's national teachers' union has warned that it could withdraw support for the striking teachers.

Alfonso Zepeda said there were concerns that the strike had been hijacked by left-wing activists.
