A plan setting out how green spaces within a city can be protected and improved is to be launched.

Highland Council said the Inverness Greenspace Strategy will be officially unveiled on 18 October.

It has already run into controversy after a councillor criticised a suggestion that a new museum could be sited on the Northern Meeting Park.

Alex Graham said it was "ironic" a park was being considered for development ahead of the strategy launch.

Other locations are also under consideration.

Mr Graham, Liberal Democrat councillor for Inverness West, added: "The Northern Meeting is one of the few remaining parks in the city."

The green spaces strategy sets out a long term vision, according to the council.

It added that it reflects the aspirations of local communities and follows consultations held last year as well as the results of an audit in 2005.

The strategy includes an action plan which will see projects delivered on the ground over the next two years.
