A boy has been stabbed to death in east London in a row over a mobile phone. A boy was stabbed to death when he tried to stop a gang stealing a friend's mobile phone.
Rizwan Darbar, 17, was stabbed in West Ham Park, Plaistow, at 1730 BST on Sunday when he intervened after a friend's mobile phone was taken. Rizwan Darbar, 17, was stabbed in West Ham Park, Plaistow, east London, on Sunday as he intervened in the robbery.
He was with two friends who were approached by a gang of youths who grabbed the mobile phone. He is the 20th teenager to have died as a result of gun or knife-related crime in London this year.
The teenager was taken to Newham General Hospital where he died over an hour later. Police have, so far, made no arrests. It has prompted calls from a senior Metropolitan police officer for more investment in young people to tackle the rise in teenage violence.
Det Ch Supt Barry Norman, head of the Met's Violent Crime Directorate, said a long-term approach was required to combat the problem of knife and weapon crime committed by young people in the capital.
Rizwan was taken to Newham General Hospital where he died about an hour after the attack.
