A young man was critically injured when he was hit by a police car answering an emergency call.

The victim was knocked down in Tally Ho Corner, Finchley, north London, at about 0230 BST, Scotland Yard said.

The marked police vehicle had its blue lights and sirens on when the accident happened, said a spokesman.

"The pedestrian, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to a north London hospital where he is in a critical condition," he said.

"The marked response vehicle was on its way to an emergency call with its blue lights and sirens on when it was in collision with the pedestrian."

He said an investigation has been opened into the accident.
