UUP leader Sir Reg Empey believes complaints about anti-social behaviour by university students in south Belfast will lead to some expulsions.

Residents and students in the Holyland area have an often uneasy relationship.

The employment and learning minister criticised the Planning Service and the university authorities for allowing tensions to spiral out of control.

"As a residential area it has been severely damaged, and I think we need to restore some order and balance."

Sir Reg told the BBC's Inside Politics it was "a blight on the whole student population".

"I would urge the university and representatives of the students union to urgently address this," he said.

"It's going to end up as a law and order situation and do enormous damage."
