Version 0 of 1.

The Daily Express quotes a Labour source as saying "it's on, we're ready to go" and that PM Gordon Brown has picked 8 November as polling day.

Only a swing putting the Tories ahead in polls would persuade Mr Brown to ditch a general election, it says.

The Guardian does not detect a loss of Labour confidence after David Cameron's speech to the Tory conference.

But the Independent says a snap election is now unlikely because of the "boldness" of Mr Cameron's speech.

Hushed court

For many of the papers, the inquest into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed remains the main news.

A CCTV image of the smiling princess in a lift at the Ritz Hotel in Paris fills the front pages of the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Daily Mirror.

The Daily Telegraph says images of the couple's last hours provide jurors and the public with an amazing insight.

The Sun describes how, frame by frame, her last hours were played out before a hushed court.

Heat resistance

The Independent is among papers to report a use for chilli peppers other than spicing up food.

The chemical that gives them their kick has been used to develop an anaesthetic which can block pain without impairing movement, touch or mental awareness.

The Times says it is likely to prove useful as an alternative to epidurals during childbirth, allowing mothers to be more aware of the experience.

Researchers say the anaesthetic could also play a useful role in dentistry.

'Incredible Bulk'

The Express quotes a Royal Marine talking about how he lifted a two-tonne lorry with his bare hands to save the life of a colleague in Afghanistan.

Colour Sgt Carl Tatton went to the aid of a fellow Marine who was trapped under the vehicle after it had been toppled by a mortar explosion.

The Mail - using the headline "Incredible Bulk" - says he lifted an object 13 times his own body weight.

"When you see one of your own mates in danger, you just react," he said.
