Version 0 of 1.

The police have blamed the Provisional IRA for murdering a suspected drug-dealer in Londonderry five years ago during their ceasefire.

Christopher O'Kane was shot dead outside his home in Currynierin on his 37th birthday in April 2001.

A detective inspector told an inquest they believed the IRA was to blame because of the way it was carried out and information they received.

But he told the coroner the guns used in the attack had no other history.

Detective Inspector Robbie Paul said that although Mr O'Kane had no drug convictions, he had a reputation for drug-dealing.

Mr O'Kane, nicknamed Cricky, was shot by a gang who lay in wait for him outside his house on the mainly nationalist Currynieran estate in the Waterside area of the city.

The three or four masked gunmen approached him as he got out of his car at Milldale Crescent.

Mr O'Kane ran, but was shot a number of times in the stomach, in a laneway across from his house.
