Blast kills Hamas security forces Six dead in latest Gaza violence
(about 16 hours later)
At least three members of Hamas' security forces in Gaza have been killed by an explosion near their headquarters in Gaza City. Two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been killed in Israeli strikes.
One report said four people died. It was not clear what caused the blast, which occurred on Gaza's waterfront. In one incident, near the southern town of Khan Younis, Israeli forces killed a 20-year-old man. It is not clear whether he was a civilian or militant.
Hamas initially said a missile had been fired from an Israeli ship. But later it released a statement saying it was not clear who was behind the blast. The militant group Hamas said one of its members was killed by Israeli fire near Rafah, in the far south of Gaza.
An Israeli spokeswoman denied knowledge of any Israeli action in the area. Late on Tuesday, four Palestinians were killed in an explosion that appears to have resulted from a clash between Palestinian armed factions.
Israel's Channel 10 TV raised speculation of an internal clash. A blast tore apart a car near the marine police headquarters in Gaza City. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades militant group said three of the dead were its members.
It quoted Israeli military officials as saying Palestinian militants fired an anti-tank rocket at the car, and said the incident was followed by an outburst of shooting. The group, which is linked to the Fatah faction, said the men were on their way to carry out a mission when their car was targeted by rival militants loyal to Hamas.
However, a website affiliated to Hamas said explosives being carried in the car detonated prematurely. The fourth person to die was a bystander in the street.
